At this time of year it's customary to look back over the past year and evaluate what's working and what needs to be changed to bring success, health, harmony, happiness and prosperity in the New Year.
One way to manifest our desires is to give our space a feng shui makeover. Feng shui is the ancient Chinese art of placement. For centuries Chinese people have subscribed to the feng shui principle of creating balanced and smooth flowing 'chi', or vital energy, to enhance their daily lives.
This year, in addition to making resolutions about your behaviors and attitudes, consider your environment as well. The start of a new year is an excellent time to evaluate the feng shui of your space because the space we live and work in every day has a significant impact on our well-being.
No matter what your goals are for 2003, here are some ideas everyone can use to enhance the feng shui of any space.
1. Clear out the clutter! Clutter is the number one feng shui offender because it creates stagnant energy, and holds you back by draining your personal chi.
2. If it's broken, fix it. Broken things carry broken or leaking energy, which means something in your life will be 'broken' or not functioning to your benefit.
3. Add new life to well-worn spaces. Clean the carpets, give the walls a fresh coat of paint, bring in new or re-vitalized energy and you'll feel more energized too. Don't forget to revisit the feng shui cures you've made through the year. Take the crystals down and wash them. Dust off the plants. Revitalize all the cures with some tender care and cleaning.
4. Make a great first impression. Attract good chi and opportunity by making sure that the entrance to your home or office is well lit, inviting and free from debris, clutter, dead plants, leaves and dirt. Add a wind chime for an extra 'oomph'.
5. Donate some books. If your bookshelves are full from stem to stern you are sending a message to the universe that says, 'Nothing new needed, we're all full here'.
6. Avoid being under pressure. It's a good idea to avoid spending time below a beam, ceiling fan or overhanging cupboard. The downward pressing chi can have a negative effect on your health or you may feel overly worried and burdened. Hang a bamboo flute or crystal to break up that oppressive chi if you must spend time there.
7. Get a good night's sleep. Sound, restful sleep will do more to keep the doctor at bay than a whole bushel of apples. Make your bedroom your personal retreat. Remove excess electronics (that's right, out with the TV) and books, anything related to work, bills or household chores. Use primarily yin colors, earth tones or skin tones, blues and greens
8. Don't get the point. Avoid placing your bed or desk in the path of 'arrow chi'. Arrow chi is created by sharp angles of walls or furniture. If this chi is pointing at you it can cause lethargy, frustration and tension, so get out of the way. A soft plant is a good solution to minimize the effect of arrow chi if you can't avoid it.
9. Affirm your intention. Take time to make affirmations rather than resolutions this year. Write down what you will accomplish this year as though it is already true, not what you're hoping for.
I'm sure you'll notice a positive effect by working on any of these items, so take your time and move through the list over the next few months. Before long you'll be reaping the benefits of your new and improved feng shui. Wishing you peace, joy and harmony.
